13/12/2021
Written By: NAVSM

Further to our recent communications regarding mandatory vaccinations for frontline healthcare workers (including volunteers) NHS England has released a second letter to the system with some additional guidance. Link to the letter and guidance here.

NHSE/I continuing to work with NHS workforce teams on any further guidance on how this will apply to volunteers and voluntary sector organisations working within and alongside the NHS and will send on any further information as and when it is available. Please do continue to let us know of any questions or concerns and we can feed this into our conversations.

 Government moves to Plan B

Following the PM’s announcement (8 December 2021) the following measures are being introduced:

Advising people to work or volunteer from home if they can. Those who cannot, including for personal reasons, should continue to go to their place of work or volunteering (from Monday 13th Dec)

Legally mandating face coverings in many indoor areas in England, including some types of events and visitor attractions. (Regulations to be laid on Thursday 9th Dec and come into force on Friday 10th Dec)

Introducing mandatory Covid status certification in certain settings (Regulations to be laid on Monday 13th Dec and come into force at 6am on Wednesday 15th Dec).

Ministers have decided to implement these measures because Omicron cases are now doubling every two or three days. The government is now communicating clearly and urgently to the public that the level of risk has increased, and with it the need to behave cautiously. There will be a new communications campaign that will include this messaging and remind people what they can do to keep themselves and others safe during the festive season.

The Volunteering guidance on GOV.UK is currently being updated to reflect these changes however in line with the Government guidance, volunteering within the NHS can and should still continue where it can be done safely and following proper risk assessment and mitigations.

If you have any questions or concerns then please contact the team via england.volunteering@nhs.net  or drop in to our next Q+A session on Tuesday 14th December at 3pm
